Course Description

Style or Substance? When it comes to Art, there is more than meets the eye. Art - from architectural details to fine arts and whether used as a source of inspiration, a focal point or a mere after-thought - is too often specified solely for aesthetic reasons. Join us as we unravel the ambiguous aspects of specifying Art and demonstrate how your practice and clients can benefit from the Art you incorporate in your projects. This seminar not only serves as a crash course in Art appreciation and current trends but also and most importantly provides the tools to educate clients on the merits of Art. We explore how to specify or commission pieces that play an active role in enhancing health, safety, and well-being in corporate, healthcare, and residential environments, as well as in community planning at large. Case studies of public and private projects illustrate ways in which Art, when used as an integral part of design, bridges architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture to positively affect our behavior, emotions, and psyche - all keys to overall health and well-being. One (1) hour is dedicated to discussing innovative "green art" and sustainability and one (1) hour stresses accessibility issues pertinent to Art.

This course takes art beyond aesthetics by addressing:
- How to integrate art into public or private projects.
- How to commission and collaborate with artists.
- How art can play an active role in creating healthy and safe environments.
- How art promotes sustainability and ensures the quality of our surroundings.
- How to use art to establish an identity for a community, corporation or individual.
- How to deploy art to benefit accessibility, maintain vitality and promote economic health.
- How art and design (interiors, architecture and landscape) work together by surveying the past, present and possible future trends.
