Course Description

This seminar uses "real world situations" to break down the major design items of all types of tiles and stones and how to properly specify, install and maintain each. Case studies are used to illustrate the most common types of failures that occur and how to prevent them. We explore how tile and stone classification (based on their physical characteristics and factors such as slip and abrasion resistance, surface hardness and foot traffic ratings) affects end-users` health, safety and welfare at large while also addressing accessibility and sustainability issues. We then discuss how to properly select the stone/tile and installation system best suited for each application. We also look at the installation phase during which surface preparation, crack isolation, water-proofing and sound isolation all play a critical role in ensuring the success of your design. Finally, we answer questions relating to types of sealers and cleaners to use for each stone type to guarantee the success and longevity of your tile and stone projects.
