Course Description

This seminar explores the rich architectural heritage of New Orleans from colonial times to the present day. The influence of national and international trends on the city`s architecture and interiors is discussed. Throughout the day, several historic buildings serve as case studies for opportunities and problems in restoration, renovation, and adaptive reuse. Topics of discussion include restoration versus renovation; selection of an appropriate restoration time frame; preservation of historic fabric versus code compliance; use of such restoration tools as CAP grants for assessment of historic fabric, historic structure reports, investment tax credits, facade servitudes; as well as health, safety and welfare issues.
